On January 8, 2011, a tragedy hit America. A lone gunman shot and killed 6 people and wounding others, including U.S. Congresswoman, Gabrielle Gifford. We all mourn the loss of Judge John M. Roll, Gabe Zimmerman, Dorothy Morris, Phyllis Schneck, Dorwan Stoddard, and the youngest victim, 9-year old Christina Taylor Green. They will never be forgotten, and our prayers and thoughts go out to their families. We also wish that the wounded will have a speedy recovery.
At the memorial, President Barack Obama said “… at a time when our discourse has become so sharply polarized – at a time when we are far too eager to lay the blame for all that ails the world at the feet of those who think differently than we do – it’s important for us to pause for a moment and make sure that we are talking with each other in a way that heals, not a way that wounds.” It is a time for us to honor the victims by coming together and begin solving all that ails us. For too long now, our politicians have used rhetoric to keep us divided. It is now time for them to come together, both Democrats and Republicans, and begin to address real issues – from jobs to immigration reform.
Representative Gifford has set a fine example on addressing Immigration Reform. While she has been known as a border-security hawk, urging the administration to deploy the National Guard to the border, she also supports the passage of the DREAM Act, which would allow a path to citizenship for children brought to the United States illegally. She has also has been critical of Arizona’s controversial immigration law, SB 1070, describing it has divisive and in no way helpful in addressing the issue of Immigration Reform.
And in talking about Christina Taylor Green, our President stated it best: “I want us to live up to her expectations. I want our democracy to be as good as she imagined it. All of us – we should do everything we can to make sure this country lives up to our children’s expectations.” And as the sun rises over Tucson, let it shine on us and let us begin to work together as the UNITED States of America.
