That Time of Year when Students Graduate and No DREAM Act to be Seen
Every year, nearly 65,000 undocumented students graduate from high school. These are young women and men who were brought into this country illegally at a very young age by their parents, and therefore at no fault of their own. For most of them, they have not known any other country except the United States. The failure to pass the DREAM Act has resulted in punishment of these “Americans.”
Many young people who now face deportation proceedings would be eligible for the DREAM Act. Passage of this legislation would undocumented immigrants who entered the U.S. before they were 16 years of age, conditional permanent residency for six years, and then they would be eligible to become legal permanent residents, if they obtain either an associate-level college degree or serve in the military for two years.
Therefore, under the DREAM Act, these young women and men do not get a free ride. They have to earn their eventual U.S. Citizenship.
Enough already and let’s pass enact it into law. It’s not only the right thing to do but also the ethical thing to do.
Congratulations to all our graduates of 2011!
