Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) introduced bill H.R. 2164 in the House recently that makes the use of E-Verify mandatory for every U.S. employer. Under the provisions outlined in the bill, employers with more than 10,000 employees would have 6 months to comply; employers with 500 to 10,000 employees would have 12 months to comply; those with 20 to 500 employees would have 18 months to comply; employers with 1 to 20 employees would need to comply within 24 months; and the employers with agricultural laborers would have 36 months.
Rep. Smith believes that passage of this would create jobs for Americans because it would make undocumented workers lose their jobs.
