About the U.S. Passport

A passport is an internationally recognized travel document that verifies the identity and nationality of the bearer. Only the U.S. Department of State has the authority to grant, issue or verify United States passports.

To obtain a passport for the first time, you need to go in person to one of over 9,000 passport acceptance facilities located throughout the United States with two photographs of yourself, proof of U.S. citizenship, and a valid form of photo identification such as a driver's license.

U.S. passport renewals can be done by mail.

Overview of the application process

Apply for a U.S. Passport for the First Time

  1. To obtain a passport for the first time, you need to go in person to one of over 9,000 passport acceptance facilities located throughout the United States with two photos of yourself, proof of U.S. citizenship, and a valid form of photo identification such as a driver's license.
  2. Fill out the U.S. passport application.
  3. Present proof of U.S. citizenship, proof of identity, and your passport photos.
  4. Pay the fee.
  5. The application will be mailed to the U.S. Department of State for processing.
  6. Your new passport will be sent to you by mail.

Applying for a U.S. Passport Renewal

  1. You can apply for a passport renewal by mail IF you A) already have a passport that is not damaged; and B) received it within the past 15 years; and C) were at least age 16 when it was issued; and D) still have the same name as in passport (or you can legally document your name change).
  2. Complete the application form and attach supporting documents, including your old passport.
  3. Mail the application and fee to the address provided on the renewal application form.
  4. Your new passport will be sent to you by mail.
