Immigration is an important issue in the upcoming election and like any other issue it is important to know as much about it as you can in order to make an informed decision. However, being informed is not a responsibility that is solely left up to voters. The policies and decisions that the candidates will potentially make will affect everyone in the United States. Permanent Residents should be particularly attentive to issues surrounding immigration.
The main discussion involving immigration for this election has turned out to be about what to do with all of the children of undocumented immigrants in the country. Both candidates have been trying to figure out a solution to this problem, but the conflict within Congress has made for a serious road-block in terms of change.
This month we have two articles discussing the immigration policies of both candidates and how they intend to affect the immigration platform. President Obama, though he did enact DACA has been criticized for his lack of action during his first term of office in regards to immigration. Mitt Romney has been variably accused of pandering to the Hispanic vote and criticized for lacking a straightforward plan for immigration reform.
Be sure to read both and get a good idea of the issues. Remember, democracy is all about participation!
