An immigration reform rally that had been planned long before the recent government shutdown has been given the go-ahead by the Park Service to continue, despite the closure of the National Mall, where the event is set to take place.
The rally is being organized by several immigration activist groups, along with Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
Park Service will allow the event to continue because the First Amendment gives the group the right to assemble, according to Susana Flores, a spokesperson for the rally.
This was the same justification used to allow World War II veterans to visit their memorial.
About 30 Congress members will be attending the immigration rally, including Nancy Pelosi.
