On Friday, President Obama stopped by the National Mall to show his support for the activists who have been fasting for a few weeks now. The protesters are trying to put some pressure on Congress to pass immigration reform before the year ends.
The visit follows Vice President Biden’s own show of support earlier last week.
The protesters are only drinking water during their fast, and they’re being supported by more than 3,000 people around the U.S. who are also fasting in a show of support.
Said Obama on the topic of immigration reform last week: “I want them to know we hear you. We’re with you. The whole country hears you.”
Cecilia Munoz, director of Obama’s domestic policy council, accompanied the President and the wife during their visit. Cecilia wrote on the White House blog and described later that those fasting “described empty stomachs but full hearts as they receive an outpouring of support.”
