Immigration Fact of the Week: The Focus of Deportations

What deportations does ICE prioritize?

ICE priorities focus on detaining and deporting undocumented immigrants who have:

  • Broken criminal laws
  • Recently crossed the border
  • Repeatedly violated immigration law
  • Are fugitives from immigration court

ICE officials must prioritize their budget and resources to remove only a limited number of the more than 10 million undocumented immigrants estimated to be currently living in the U.S. In fiscal year 2011, for instance, ICE removed more than 396,000 individuals. Of these removals, 90 percent fell into one of ICE’s enforcement priority categories.
