Born Cristeta Pasia in 1962 in the Philippines and grew up in Sampaloc, Manila, Ms Comerford is the current White House executive chef and the first female and first person of ethnic minority origin to hold this position.
She attended the University of the Philippines, Diliman in Quezon City, and majored in food technology but immigrated to the United States at the age of 23 before she could finish her education. Ms Comerford was recruited by White House executive chef Walter Scheib III in 1995 to work in the Clinton White House and was appointed White House executive chef by First Lady Laura Bush in 2005 after Mr. Scheib resigned. In 2009, the Obama White House retained her as executive chef. First Lady Michelle Obama said of her, “Also the mom of a young daughter, I appreciate our shared perspective on the importance of healthy eating and healthy families.”
Cristeta Comferford entered the United States on a family visa and is currently a naturalized U.S. citizen.
