Superman renounces US citizenship in latest comic

America has had a lot of great citizens over the years but it appears that the U.S. is about to lose one of its fictional icons.

Superman reportedly renounces his US citizenship in issue number 900 of the comic book series, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“I intend to speak before the United Nations tomorrow and inform them that I am renouncing my US citizenship. I’m tired of having my actions construed as instruments of US policy,” the alien superhero says. “‘Truth, justice and the American way’ – it’s not enough anymore.”

Superman reportedly reaches his decision after he is reprimanded by a government official after he attended a nonviolent protest in Iran.

“Superman is a visitor from a distant planet who has long embraced American values. As a character and an icon, he embodies the best of the American way,” Jim Lee and Dan DiDio, DC’s co-publishers, told the NY Post.

There are many benefits that the Man of Steel is walking away from as US citizenship allows people to be permanent residents of America and to vote in elections, among other things.
