Immigration legislation in the United States has had its ups and downs throughout its history, from the Page Act of 1875, that prohibited the entry of immigrants considered to be "undesirable," including anyone from Asia coming to the U.S. as a contract laborer, to the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which was the first race-based immigration legislation that suspended Chinese immigration and it was not repealed until December 17, 1943 by the Magnuson Act.

SALVADOR ZAMORA, ON A HUNGER STRIKE TO PROTEST GEORGIA'S IMMIGRATION LAW, HB 87

Salvador Zamora, a Mexican immigrant who became a U.S. citizen in 2010, began a hunger strike on July 1st, the day Georgia's new immigration law, House Bill 87, went into effect. On the 40th day of a hunger strike, Mr. Zamora, in a wheelchair and accompanied by supporters, delivered a letter to Georgia Governor Nathan Deal in his office in the state capitol.

According to a recent San Francisco Chronicle article, the Obama administration is enforcing the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) by denying immigration benefits to a same sex couple married seven years ago in Massachusetts. Bradford Wells is the U.S. citizen spouse, and his husband, Anthony John Makk, is a citizen of Australia. Mr. Wells filed a Form I-130 Immigration Petition for Alien Relative, which was denied by the administration on July 26. Mr. Wells has AIDS, and relies on his husband as his primary caregiver.
