Green Card Holders And Visitors Should Carry ID All The Time

Table of Contents

If you’re living in the U.S. as a green card holder, student, worker, or visitor, here’s an important and urgent update:
You must carry your immigration documents at all times—or face legal consequences.

That’s the clear message from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which recently issued a public advisory stating that failure to carry your alien registration ID—even during routine travel—can result in fines and a misdemeanor charge.

“Always carry your alien registration documentation. Not having these when stopped by federal law enforcement can lead to a misdemeanor and fines,” CBP warned on X (formerly Twitter).

This rule isn’t new. It’s part of Section 1304(e) of Title 8 of the U.S. Code, which mandates that all non-citizens aged 18 and above must carry their registration card (such as a Green Card) at all times.
And now, enforcement is being prioritized more strictly than ever before.

No Room for Error: DHS Cracks Down on Non-Compliance

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is making one thing clear—non-citizens must follow the law to the letter. DHS Director Kristi Noem emphasized:

“There will be no sanctuary for non-compliance.”

Even U.S. Vice President JD Vance echoed this sentiment, stating that permanent residency is not a guaranteed right and green card holders can be deported at the administration’s discretion.

That’s a stark reminder: no matter how long you’ve lived in the U.S., unless you are a citizen, your future in the country can be uncertain. An expired Green Card could also create issues. If you have an expired Green Card, renew it today.

Why Citizenship Is the Safer, Smarter Choice

Green card holders are still subject to regulations, surveillance, and risks that don’t apply to naturalized citizens.

By becoming a U.S. citizen, you:

  • Eliminate the need to carry documents at all times
  • Gain full protection under U.S. law
  • Get the right to vote and influence policies
  • Secure your future and your family’s future
  • No longer fear the risk of deportation over administrative errors

Take Control. Take the Next Step.

Apply for U.S. Citizenship today.

Secure your rights. Protect your future. Citizenship isn’t just a privilege—it’s your power.
