Temporary Protected Status in the United States

Foreign nationals hailing from countries under duress are eligible to apply for temporary protected status with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. This extension allows you to remain in the United States until the crisis in your country is resolved. In the meantime you will be allowed to live and work in America. There are a variety of reasons that a country may warrant its abroad residents eligibility for temporary protected status including extensive warfare, epidemics or natural disasters. Below is a list of the countries given temporary protected status.

Countries of Origin Eligible for Temporary Protected Status

El Salvador

Salvadorian nationals have been granted temporary protected status as of March 9, 2001. This status will expire on March 9, 2018. Applicants may re-register between July 8, 2016 through September 6, 2016. Current employment authorization documents will remain active until September 9, 2017.

Guinea

Guinea nationals have been granted temporary protected status as of November 21, 2014. This status will expire on May 21, 2017. Employment authorization documents issued under the designation of TPS Guinea is automatically extended through May 20, 2017.

Haiti

Haitian nationals have been granted temporary protected status as of July 23, 2011. This status will expire on Jan 22, 2018. Applicants may re-register from May 24, 2017through July 24, 2017.Employment authorization documents were automatically extended through Jan 18, 2018.

Honduras

Honduran nationals have been granted temporary protected status as of January 5, 1999. This status will expire on January 5, 2018. Applicants were able to re-register between May 16, 2016 – July 15, 2016. Current employment authorization documents will remain active until January 5, 2017.

Liberia

Liberia nationals have been granted temporary protected status as of November 21, 2014. This status will expire on May 21, 2017. Employment authorization documents issued under the designation of TPS Liberia is automatically extended through May 20, 2017.

Nepal

Nepal nationals have been granted temporary protected status as of June 24, 2015 . This status will expire on June 24, 2018. Applicants may re-register between October 26, 2016 through December 27, 2016. Current employment authorization documents will remain active until June 24, 2017.

Nicaragua

Nicaraguan nationals have been granted temporary protected status as of January 5, 1999. This status will expire on January 5, 2018. Applicants were able to re-register between May 16, 2016 – July 15, 2016. Current employment authorization documents will remain active until January 5, 2017.

Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone nationals have been granted temporary protected status as of November 21, 2014. This status will expire on May 21, 2016. Employment authorization documents issued under the designation of TPS Sierra Leone is automatically extended through May 20, 2017.

Somali

Somali nationals have been granted temporary protected status as of September 18, 2012. This status will expire on September 17, 2018. Applicants were able to re-register between January 17, 2017 through March 20, 2017. Employment authorization documents have been automatically extended through September 17, 2017.

Sudan

Sudanese nationals have been granted temporary protected status as of May 3, 2013. This status will expire on November 2, 2018. Applicants were able to re-register between January 25, 2016 and March 25, 2016. Employment authorization documents were automatically extended through November 2, 2018.

South Sudan

South Sudanese nationals have been granted temporary protected status as of January 25, 2016. This status will expire on May 2, 2019. Applicants were able to re-register between January 25, 2016 and March 25, 2016. Initial registration was January 25, 2016 through July 25, 2016. Employment authorization documents were automatically extended through May 2, 2019.

Syria

Syrian nationals have been granted temporary protected status as of August 1, 2016. This status will expire on March 31, 2018. Applicants may re-register between August 1, 2016 and September 30, 2016. Initial registration period is August 1, 2016 through January 30, 2017. Employment authorization documents were automatically extended through March 31, 2017.

Yemen

Yemen nationals have been granted temporary protected status as of January 4, 2017 . This status will expire on September 3, 2018. Initial registration period is between January 4, 2017 through July 3, 2017. Applicants who already hold Temporary Protected Status may re-register between January 4, 2017 through March 6, 2017. Employment authorization documents automatically get extended through September 3, 2017.

Pass the U.S. Citizenship Test

When applying for U.S. Citizenship through naturalization, United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) does require a Citizenship test to be taken by all applicants. The Citizenship test will be based on the ability of reading, writing and speaking English, knowledge of American history and the government of the United States.
